Styles Collide in Arsenal-PSG Champions League Final

Last year’s Champions League final saw Paris Saint-Germain finally end their nearly two-decade campaign to reach Europe’s pinnacle, as they defeated Inter Milan in decisive fashion to be crowned champions.

Now, they find themselves in a position to become the first back-to-back champions since Real Madrid in 2017/18, entering Saturday’s final against Arsenal as +130 favourites to win inside of 90 minutes and shorter, -150 favourites, to lift the trophy.

PSG have arrived at the precipice of back-to-back European crowns on the back of an incredible, relentless attack. Across 50 matches in Ligue 1 and the Champions League so far, they've averaged 2.36 goals per game, with their dominance over the French league allowing them to maintain a healthy rotation among their attacking talents.

PSG's attacking prowess is illustrated in the goalscorer markets, where Ousmane Dembele (+170), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (+190), and Gancolo Ramos (+185) all have shorter anytime goal odds than the Arsenal player with the shortest odds, Viktor Gyokeres (+220), who isn't even a guarantee to start.

The road to Saturday's final in Budapest has done little to quell the notion they're Europe's best team, either. A 6-5 win on aggregate over Bayern Munich in the semifinals was a massive statement, after the two clubs spent most of the campaign widely seen as the two best in the competition.

Saturday’s opponent represents a challenge unlike any other, however. Arsenal won the Premier League and made the Champions League Final through defensive stability on another level compared to any other team in the world, and a game-breaking reliance on set pieces.

The Gunners conceded just 27 goals across their 38-game title-winning campaign in England, but have been even tougher in Europe. In 14 matches, they've allowed just six goals, with only four coming from open play. There are fair questions around their mentality and ability to create a high level of chances in attack, but defensively, even PSG’s illustrious attack will face a tremendous challenge in breaking them down.

In a high-level example of styles make fights, however, oddsmakers are siding with the elite attack. Arsenal come back as +210 underdogs to win inside of 90 minutes and a +110 underdog to lift the trophy.

The story of Arsenal’s success under Mikel Arteta has been widespread doubt in their ability to win until they finally got across the finish line in the Premier League this season. Once again, the Gunners find themselves counted out. In Saturday’s final, the underdogs can silence doubt, but only if they can first silence Europe’s best attack and reigning champions.
