USA-Japan on a Collision Course for World Baseball Classic Rematch

The 2023 World Baseball Classic ended in cinematic fashion, with Shohei Ohtani striking out his then teammate Mike Trout in the ninth inning to secure Japan’s third title across five tournaments.

Though the USA will head into the 2026 World Baseball Classic with an improved roster and vastly bolstered pitching staff, WBC oddsmakers suggest there’s three genuine contenders for this month’s tournament – and the chance of a rematch in the championship game.

USA (-115)

The U.S. responded to its loss in '23 with an uptick in player commitment for '26, as they enter the tournament with a star-studded roster, led by Aaron Judge in the lineup and Paul Skenes on the mound.

Provided they top Pool B, with Mexico their toughest opponent, the Americans will likely avoid Japan until a potential rematch in the final.

Japan (+335)

The defending champions will again be led by phenom Shohei Ohtani, though a tournament-sealing save isn’t in the cards this time. Ohtani will not pitch for Japan during the tournament, instead filling their lineup as the designated hitter.

They will, however, have the luxury of handing the ball to reigning World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The Dodgers' ace proved his big-game credentials in October, when he registered three wins and a 1.02 ERA in L.A.'s seven-game triumph over the Blue Jays and now gets the chance to repeat his heroics on the international stage.

Dominican Republic (+380)

The Dominican Republic haven't made it to a semifinal since 2013, when they went on to win it all, but have brought plenty of star power as they attempt to re-enter contention.

Led by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Juan Soto, and Julio Rodriguez, the Dominicans are rightfully in the conversation alongside Japan and the USA. There’s just one problem - the looming clash against team USA in the semifinal.

Canada (+5000)

Tucked behind the three favourites is the trio of Venezuela (+900), Puerto Rico (+1900), and Mexico (+2000), before Team Canada slots in seventh on the odds board.

The 2023 tournament saw Canada achieve their best ever showing in the WBC, with a quarterfinal appearance. They are well positioned to make it two consecutive knockout stages in '26, where a date with the Americans would likely await.
