College Football Playoff Promises Blowouts – And a Potential Big Ten Rematch

Not without the patented controversy that always follows postseason rankings, the 12-team college football playoff is set. Despite the upset in the Big Ten title game, and a new No. 1 team in the country, the college football national champion odds are led by the defending champs – with a proven challenger close behind.

Ohio State (+195)

The Buckeyes avoided humiliation in The Game this time around, holding off a competitive Michigan team, only to fall at the next hurdle with a tight loss to the Indiana Hoosiers. A rematch could loom in the national championship, but first, Ohio State will await the winner of Miami and Texas A&M, before a potential date with the Georgia Bulldogs in the semifinal.

Indiana (+320)

Curt Cignetti, Fernando Mendoza, and the Hoosiers crowned the greatest season in program history with the Big Ten title and the No. 1 spot in the country ahead of the playoff. Now, they wait to meet the winner of Alabama and Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day to start a potential three-game march to one of the most unlikely national championships in the sport's recent history.

Georgia (+600)

The Bulldogs avenged a September loss to the Tide with a dominant win over 'Bama in the SEC title game, securing a bye to the Sugar Bowl and a date with the winner of Tulane and Ole Miss. A tougher test would then await, with the Bulldogs on the Buckeyes’ side of the bracket, but SEC bona fides can’t be dismissed.

Oregon (+750)

With a first-round date against Sun Belt champions James Madison, the Ducks may be looking ahead to a potential Orange Bowl clash with Texas Tech – and, ultimately, a rematch with Indiana, who went into Eugene and came out victors in October. After a Rose Bowl humiliation as the No. 1 team in the country in last year’s playoff, these Ducks won’t be short on motivation.

Texas Tech (+850)

Rounding out the schools with odds shorter than 14/1 to win the national championship is Big 12 winners Texas Tech. With the luxury of a bye, the Red Raiders will await the winner of Oregon and James Madison before they try to continue the form that saw them outscore opp pents 245-43 over the last six weeks of the season.

The Rest

The expanded playoff field sees a litany of outsiders filling out the bracket. A Texas A&M team undone by the Longhorns in rivalry week slots in at +1,800, followed by SEC runners-up Alabama and a decimated Ole Miss squad at +2,250 apiece. One-time title hopefuls Miami is close behind at +2,700, with Oklahoma (+5,000) tenth and ahead of true long shots in Tulane and James Madison (+75,000).
