Best-on-Best Awaits Championship Weekend

Despite a postseason that has delivered upsets in both the AFC and NFC, championship weekend will feature the four teams who spent most of the season vying for their conference’s respective No. 1 seeds.

Though a major curveball was thrown as the dust settled on the Divisional Round, there’s plenty to look forward to as Super Bowl LX’s combatants are decided.

In the AFC, the Denver Broncos experienced a stunning pyrrhic victory to set up the AFC Championship game at Mile High. While they got by the Buffalo Bills in a wild game, they’ll now be without quarterback Bo Nix, after the sophomore suffered a fractured ankle in overtime.

With former New England Patriots draft pick Jarret Stidham set to take the reins for the Broncos on Sunday, the AFC’s No. 1 seed is a 5-point underdog against the Pats. Though Nix’s injury drastically changed the outlook, it’s fair to wonder if New England was in line to be favoured, regardless. In recent weeks, its defense has ascended to a level that matches any unit across the league, and nothing has proven to be too much, too soon for a young team.

On the other side of the bracket, any other matchup would’ve simply felt wrong. NFC West foes the Seattle Seahawks and L.A. Rams delivered two classics during the regular season, and now meet again in Seattle with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.

After the Rams escaped with a 21-19 victory in the first meeting - thanks to a missed last-second field goal - the Seahawks found some revenge in an epic rematch. A game-winning two-point conversion in overtime gave Seattle a 38-37 win, and control of the NFC’s No. 1 seed, which it never gave up.

Thanks in part to that Week 16 win, the Seahawks will welcome the Rams back to Seattle, with the home side a 2.5-point favourite on Sunday night. While the Rams have wobbled in recent weeks, and Seattle’s seemingly only growing stronger, past performances get thrown out when divisional opponents meet for a third and final time.

With arguably the league’s four best teams left standing, the stage is set for an epic championship Sunday in the NFL.
