Super Bowl Sunday: What to Expect This Weekend
A postseason that has featured upsets, blowouts, and best-on-best battles has left us with a rematch 11 years in the making, as the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots meet in Sunday’s Super Bowl.
While some may remain skeptical of Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold’s big-game reliability, there’s no doubting their place in the league hierarchy. Throughout the regular season, they have proven to be an elite team in all three phases.
After a blowout win over the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round and a narrow triumph in the NFC title game against the similarly dominant L.A. Rams, the Seahawks head to Super Bowl LX as a 4.5-point favourite.
A mark of how brilliant their offense has been – and a vote of confidence in Darnold’s ability to continue to keep the ghosts at bay – is the Seahawks’ team total of 26.0 (Over -130/Under -110), which is the same number of points the Pats have allowed in total across its three preceding playoff games. The full game’s total, meanwhile, sits at 45.5 after opening at 46.5 following conference championship weekend.
As illustrated by the unit’s prowess throughout January, the Patriots arrive in the Super Bowl on the back of dominant defensive performances. While the Pats may succeed in blunting what has been an explosive Seahawks offense, they’ll need Drake Maye and company to join the party after a troublingly slow postseason.
It can be done – the same, muted offense managed to put up 21 against a ruthless Houston Texans defense. But, the criticism thrown at the Pats all year long, about the weakness of their opponents, also leaves one wondering how big-game ready they are. While the Seahawks had to outlast the Rams and 49ers in a relentless divisional race, the Pats’ lone tests came in matchups with the Buffalo Bills and then a straightforward playoff slate.
Now, Maye and the Patriots will face the toughest possible test in the biggest possible stage. Like Darnold, they’ve overcome plenty of questions to get to Super Bowl LX, but there’s one final obstacle.
Whether it’s the Pats finally proving their quality, once and for all, and getting back to the mountaintop, or Darnold silencing his critics and delivering the Seahawks a title they’ve waited more than a decade for, Super Bowl Sunday will deliver a definitive conclusion to an unpredictable, memorable NFL season.
