One Final Step in Canada’s Inspiring Women’s Rugby World Cup Journey

After a win over dynastic New Zealand in the semifinal, Canada will play for glory in the Women’s World Cup Final this Saturday at Twickenham Stadium in London.

Though there is still one more massive hurdle to clear, it’s been an inspiring journey already for the Canadians.

Just six months ago, Canada’s women’s rugby team announced an effort to raise one million dollars to help their journey to the 2025 tournament in England.

With the support of their country behind them, they set out in a group that included three top-13 ranked opponents in the world, including two of the home nations in Scotland and Wales.

Despite facing fierce Scottish and Welsh support, as well as an ascendent Fiji team, the Canadian women rolled through their group with three wins in three and a +121 point differential.

The knockout stage took on an Oceania theme, with the Canadians matched up against No. 7-ranked Australia – who were promptly bounced from the tournament in a 46-5 loss at the hands of the red-and-white.

Their reward? A matchup against a New Zealand side that have won six of the previous seven women’s rugby World Cups. Yet, in a clash of No. 2 vs. No. 3 in the world, the Kiwis were no match for the higher-ranked nation, with Canada advancing to the final with a 34-19 victory.

Now, the stage is set for Canada to conclude their amazing journey – and what a stage it is. Against the hosts and No. 1-ranked England (-310 to win on Saturday), in front of over 80,000 rugby-mad fans in London, the Canadians will enter as +245 underdogs – but they can leave as World Champions.
