A Crowded Path to the Super Bowl Awaits in 2025 NFL Season
A league famous for its parity begins a wide-open campaign next week, as 14 teams enter the 2025 NFL season with odds shorter than 30/1 to win the Super Bowl. For each of those 14, a season that ends on a podium amid a blizzard of confetti is well within reason.
The Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills (+675)*, led by MVP talents at quarterback, have knocked on the door for years now only to be denied by the dynastic Kansas City Chiefs. NFL history is riddled with teams stranded on close, but it does feel like a matter of when Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen break through.
The defending champion Philadelphia Eagles (+700) and runner-up Chiefs (+800) slot right in behind, with the league’s best roster and best player doing heavy lifting for their respective teams.
Fifth on the board, at +1100, is the Detroit Lions. Though Detroit has retained most of a team that went 15-2 last year, with new coordinators on either side of the ball, it has the most to prove among the top five – just how Dan Campbell would want it.
Another five pack follows the Lions, albeit from a distance with the Green Bay Packers (+1900), Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, and Washington Commanders (+2000), and Cincinnati Bengals (+2100) bunched together. Of that quartet, only Green Bay hasn’t been particularly close in recent seasons – but already Jordan Love has proven his quality in a big-time postseason game.
Rounding out the top 14 are the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings (+2400), followed by the L.A. Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+2700).
In what’s effectively year two of Sean Payton’s tenure, Denver’s primed to challenge Kansas City’s divisional dominance, while the Vikings have insulated new starter JJ McCarthy off the competitive advantage a rookie quarterback’s contract provides. In Hollywood, it’s a fool’s errand to doubt the second year of Jim Harbaugh; in Tampa, Baker Mayfield is surrounded by a ridiculously deep offense.
Save for a couple of memorable underdog stories, the NFL’s elite typically manage to navigate the postseason. In 2025, with a field rich in talent, the league’s kingmakers will need clever manoeuvring to safely find their way to Super Bowl LX.
