Kings of Europe PSG Seek World-Stage Glory
It’s been a triumphant summer for the revamped Club World Cup, with lively atmospheres and exciting matches helping to lift a competition preceded by plenty of skepticism.
Now, the 63rd and final match of the tournament is set for Sunday with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain facing Chelsea, who won the previous version of the Club World Cup in 2021.
Unsurprisingly, after a 5-0 romp in the Champions League Final just six weeks ago and a dominant 4-0 display against Real Madrid in Wednesday’s semifinal, PSG will enter Sunday’s final as a -340 favourite to lift the trophy.
Save for one of the upsets of the tournament – a 1-0 group-stage loss at the hands of Botafogo – PSG have been untroubled throughout the summer, navigating their five other matches with an aggregate score of 16-0.
To crown the most successful months in club history, PSG will now need to get through Chelsea, who come back as a +225 underdog to lift the trophy in Sunday’s final. Though they’re a considerable underdog, oddsmakers do like their chances of breaching PSG’s defense, with both teams to score at -160 (and +115 to not).
Despite the benefit of a much easier draw, Chelsea's path to the final has been considerably less smooth.
The Blues were their group's runner-up, with Brazilian side Flamengo winning 3-1 in the decisive match. They then required extra time to get past Benfica in the Round of 16 and were aided by an own goal in a 2-1 win over Palmeiras in the quarterfinals, before a 2-0 win over Fluminense saw them through to the final.
With an extra day’s rest and tournament-winning experience of their own – having won the UEFA Conference League last month – Chelsea will be far from an easy out for Paris-Saint Germain. After the success of the maiden expanded Club World Cup, the only guaranteed result on Sunday is yet another thrilling match.
